Title: Lead Exposure on the Rise Despite Decline in Poisoning Cases
Author: Mark Fischetti
This article is about the troubles of lead. Lead levels have gone down in people, but it is still above the natural human levels. The levels thought to be 'safe' were actually too high. Exposure to lead can cause things from ADHD, increased blood pressure. The reason that lead is still high in the human body is because lead is still in drinking water in many communities. The lead comes from lead pipes, brass fittings or solder used in plumbing. 25,000 to 30,000 tons of lead enters the U.S from hunting and shooting. To reduce the lead levels, tougher laws can be imposed. Things that involve lead can be removed, like lead paint and lead pipes. Cost analyses might help push regulators into action.
It interesting to me because I would've thought that banning certain items would reduce the concentration of chemicals by a large number. It reduced to a lower amount, but not to the amount where it is 'safe' for the human population. The number is still above the natural level in humans. After I see the banning of a substance, I feel safe and comfortable. I would think that the levels of substances are very low. After reading this, I would not feel safe around substances that are still banned and such.
The next steps are to create tougher laws as said in the article.
Creating tougher laughs would reduce the concentration level of lead and many other substances that could cause harm to us. We could also tax the lead products, to prevent more people from buying these products. With less people using lead because of the tax. It makes you feel as if a problem is solved. After the first few sentences, it talks about how problems concerning lead are still not solved. It starts with what the problem is, why the problem occurred and ends with ways we can solve the problem.
