Define the following and explain how it is associated in the process of bioremediation. Give an example on how each is used to break down hazardous waste.
Phytoextraction- It is a subprocess of phytoremediation. Plants take in contaminants and store them in their tissues. It is associated with bioremediation because it extracts waste and heavy metals in the soil. All plants that are able to do any of the other steps above are able to do phytoextraction.
Phytoremediation-Treating envi problems with plants that migitate the problem w/out excavating the problem with machines. It is associated to bioremediation because they both involve living organisms to break down waste. Ex/ plants that are resistant to certain types of pollutants or contaminants, such as hydrilla, that can break down the waste in areas on contamination or pollution.
Phytodegredation- use of enzymes help catalyze the breakdown of contaminants into smaller molecules, which is then absorbed by the plants. It is associated with bioremediation because it stops the spread of contamination by breaking down the waste. Ex/ plant oxidoreductases to breakdown and convert phenolics and anilines waste in water treatment system.
Phytostabilization- Reduction of mobility of heavy metals in soil. It is associated with bioremediation, because it prevents pollutants from spreading. Ex/ to plant seeds around the site of contamination to break down or to stop the spreading of the contamination, a vegetable cap to stabilize mine tailings for example.
